Emmelyne stood at the ships railing, her thoughts drifting as she gazed out over the ocean. she had to admit that she wasn't very fond of the sea, and was happy to know that they were nearing the end of their voyage. She sighed, folding her arms on the railing and resting her chin on them. The wind touseled her thick mass of hair, which had grown out considerably during her travels. She felt gritty, tired and lonely, and yearned for home.
Raine flitted about the ship in the warmth of the mid-day sun, flirting half-heartedly with the crew, though it was obvious that she wasn't really interested. Emmelyne watched her out of the corner of her eye, envious of the fae girl's out going nature. Raine caught Emme's gaze and grinned. The tall, sea weathered man she's been bothering caught the opening and turned to return to his work. Rejected, but not caring, Raine wandered over to the elvin girl.
"Emme, Emme, Emme." She said, slowly walking to the railing. She flipped her hair back. "I'm bored. How 'bout you?"
Emmelyne relaxed a bit, and nodded. "I don't like the sea much... but we'll be reaching our destination soon."
"hmm...." Raine nodded, half listening. She perked up suddenly. "Wanna find something to do? Maybe celebrate our last night on ship?"
Emmelyne rolled her eyes. Whatever was coming next was likely to be nothing but trouble. "Depends on what you have in mind."
Raine grinned again. "How bout... just... a girls night? You, me, Sky and Amiel. Sky and I picked up a couple of things in the city I'd like to share with you." She winked, " nothing bad, I promise... well, nothing TOO bad."
Emmelyne sighed. "I don't know. I prefer to be on my own, to think right now."
Raine pouted, putting her hands on her hips. "Oh no you don't. We took the time to think of you, you're coming!"
Emmelyne was startled by Raine's reaction, and the hint of hurt in her voice. "Oh... Okay.." She stuttered. "I didn't mean..."
Raine grinned again. "Cool!" She paused for amoment. "You know... this is kind a nice. I mean, I wish Raven were here, but I dunno. It's kinda nice without him..."
Emmelyne raised a brow. "I'm not sure I follow."
"Oh, I dunno. You're kinda different. I feel like I can talk to you now... like a sister."
"What do you mean by that? What does Raven have to do with it... We've always been sister elvin."
Raine just shrugged. "You really like him, huh? Like really really like him."
Emmelyne laughed somewhat nervously. "Well, yeah. I've never had friends, and Raven's strong. I know I can depend on him. It's a good feeling." Emmelyne paused.
"hmmm... It's hard to find people you can trust. It's harder to lose them." Raine said somberly. Emmelyne looked at the Fairy girl, feeling a slight tighness in her chest. She took a ragged breath. She struggled to find something to say, something to fill the akward silence that gave her mind the freedom to feed into unpleasant thoughts. Loss, it seemed all of them were plagued by pain and loss. Hers was no more tragic than the others... but it was tough burden to bear. The fear, the guilt, the anxiety. Her hands trembled, and she took a faltering step back.
"I... i"m going to my cabin. I'm sorry Raine, I dont' feel well. The ocean..." She fumbled for an excuse to escape before her emotions overwhelmed her. Emmelyne quickly made her way to the stairs, Raine trailing after.
"Are you okay?" Raine called, then muttering to herself, "silly elf girl, just trying to be nice... " Emmelyne paused, her hand on the door of her cabin, and looked up at the Fairy girl, framed by the light from the doorway of the stairs as she decended.
Emmelyne bowed her head for a moment composing herself. "I... I'm scared... I guess." She admitted, blinking away tears unsuccessfully. Her hands balled into fists at her side. "I'm weak, and scared... but I don't want your pitty." She said firmly, still not looking up.
Raine laughed suddenly, it was a light sound, not harshe or judging. "I think you're silly, Elf. But I don't pitty you, and you're not weak. Just silly!" She exclaimed. Emmelyne looked up at her, startled, as Raine took her by the shoulder and steered her into her cabin. "Sit down." she told the elf girl, who found a spot on her small cot. Raine leaned against the wall looking at her companion.
"Now..." Raine stated. "Why do you do this?"
Emmelyne shook her head, "I don't under..."
"Why do you do this to yourself? It's SILLY." Raine said with more strength. "Life's no fun when you're so caught up being worried."
"But there is so much at stake... How can I not?"
Raine plopped down on the cot next to her. "Because worrying doesn't do a damn thing. Neither does moaning over the past." Raine leaned a little into Emmelyne. "I know there is a lot at stake... but the world isn't gonig to end. I'm sure of it. And if it does... what's teh worst that can happen? We all die right?" Raine shrugged. "I might as well have died, all that I knew is is gone. But it all still happened. I still have the memories. And I'm alive now, making new memories."
Emmelyne nodded, whiping at her eyes. "but don't you still feel like soemthign inside is broken? Missing?"
Raine leaned forward, resting her elbows on her thighs, studying her own bare feet. She wiggled her toes and smiled. "I guess. It hurts, but it's... like a burning, it's warm inside me. Anything that hurt so much to lose was worth knowing. I'm happy for that." She shook her head, there were tears in her eyes now. Damn it, she thought. The silly elf girl is getting to me.
Emmelyne nodded, catching a glint of tears in Raine's eye as well. She sighed. We've all been through so much... and with the exception of Chaos, we're still just children... trying to save the world. She smiled at the thought, her heart lifting. Who's to know what'll happen. But we're here today. She stood, taking the fairy girls's hands and pulling her up, and flung her arms around her.
Raine stiffened, "Hey! what are you doing, you crazy elf!"
Emmelyne giggled and let her go. "Just a hug. You're good friend, Raine. Come on, you said you were bored. What's Sky up to?
